The Problem of Antibiotic Resistance
The increasing interest of people and science in natural health

One of the biggest health problems today is the growing antibiotic
resistance of many bacteria. The reasons may differ. Generally there
are said to be three major reasons.
For a long time people relied on antibiotics whenever they assumed they
had a bacterial infection. Therefore they were pushing their doctors
to prescribe antibiotics even if not necessary. To please their
patients many doctors did so. This had the effect that the body got used
to certain antibiotics. Antibiotics cause certain bacteria to become
stronger and after a while resistant to the antibiotic.
Another reason for the growing resistance is that doctors very often do
not really know what bacteria exactly cause an infection so they
prescribe a broad spectrum antibiotic that fights a wide range of
bacteria. The disadvantage of that is that also good bacteria are
destroyed. Those good bacteria function often as a barrier for bad
bacteria that try to attack our immune system. In general one can say
that the more you fight the bacteria, the more resistant they become.
A third reason for the increased resistance is the use of antibiotics
in agriculture. 50% of all antibiotics are used for crop, fighting
bacterial infections in the animals and making them stronger and
healthier. So, as end consumer, human beings accumulate these
antibiotics over the years. The antibiotics in our bodies cause
bacteria to become resistant. Once resistant bacteria are also a lot
stronger and there are no antibiotics left to treat the infection.
According to a study, people that had recently taken antibiotics would
get infected easier with resistant bacteria than those who did not take
antibiotics.
Another problem in our health system arises with the overuse of
antibacterial products in the house. By killing the harmless
bacteria that usually create a barrier, it is easier for pathogens (the
bad bacteria) to invade and cause bacterial infections.
